‘F1’ | Anatomy of a Scene

Joseph Kosinski narrates a sequence from his film, starring Brad Pitt.

My name is Joseph Kosinski and I am the director of “F1.” “Into turn one and there’s three cars gone off!” In this sequence at the Hungarian Grand Prix, we see Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt, implement his own strategy without telling the rest of his team. So this sequence, there’s a couple different filming techniques we used here. We had modified the track cameras that Formula One uses to capture the material in a very, very high quality 4K format. We also had our own cameras mounted on our race cars, and then we had a camera developed by Apple that went into the pod behind the real Formula One drivers head. So in this scene, you get to see the two forces coming together. The team principal played by Kim Bodnia. “What’s wrong with the car?” “The guy sitting in it.” “Are you insane?!” “We need hard tires.” He just wants to stick with the plan they all discussed and Sonny Hayes coming in with a plan of his own. “Make him go.” “How?” “You think I don’t know my tires?” “I was a mechanic.” “Five championship titles, my bare freaking hands.” And it makes for this great scene between Brad Pitt and Kim Bodnia. “Give him his tires.”
