Liam Payne case hit by setback as officials seek more evidence

Liam Payne’s inquest was pushed back as the coroner asked for more evidence and eyewitness accounts before moving ahead with the case.

The 31-year-old singer, who rose to fame with One Direction, died in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

During a short hearing at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court, senior coroner Crispin Butler said there were still “continuing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances surrounding Liam’s death.”

He explained that full reports and witness statements were needed before the final inquest could take place.

A post-mortem report showed that the late music icon died from multiple injuries and “internal and external haemorrhage” after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel.

However, the next review has been set for May 7, 2026.

The court also heard that some papers, including the autopsy report and police findings from Argentina, already have been shared with the UK authorities.

These documents will be translated before the coroner speaks with Liam’s family.

Officials in Argentina have dropped charges against three of the five people who were being investigated in connection with the case.

Mr Butler said the final inquest would focus on the main questions and that is “who Liam was, how he died, and what exactly happened that night.”

For the unversed, Liam, who grew up in Wolverhampton, began his solo career in 2016 that touched millions of fans around the world.
