ITR filing FY 2024-25 due date today: Having difficulty accessing the Income Tax e-filing portal? Tax department shares 7 point guide

ITR filing FY 2024-25: September 15 is the deadline or due date to file your income tax returns for AY 2025-26. Some users have been reporting facing issues with the income tax portal. Filing your ITR on time is important to avoid penalties. With just hours left for the ITR filing due date to end, the Income Tax department has issued an advisory for taxpayers facing issues with the tax filing process. In a fresh advisory issued from its official X handle @IncomeTaxIndia, the Income Tax Department explained that many of the common access problems taxpayers face are not system-wide glitches but local issues linked to browser or device settings. And the good news — most of them can be fixed with a few simple steps.

ITR filing: ‘Glitches’ on tax website? Tax Department issues advisory

Here’s what the department says you should do if you’re unable to access the portal:Step 1: Delete temporary files Press Win + R → type temp and %temp% → delete all files. This removes clutter that can block smooth portal access.Step 2: Clear browser cache & cookies Go to Browser Settings → choose Clear browsing data → select cache + cookies. This refreshes your browser and resolves loading errors.Step 3: Use a supported browser Switch to the latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge for best performance.Step 4: Open in Incognito/Private Mode Use Ctrl+Shift+N (Chrome/Edge) or Ctrl+Shift+P (Firefox) to launch a private browsing window.Step 5: Disable browser extensions Turn off ad-blockers or privacy tools that may interfere with portal operations.Step 6: Update your browser Always make sure your browser is on the latest version.Step 7: Try a different network If all else fails, switch to another Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. The department noted that these checks resolve most access-related difficulties, and urged users facing persistent problems to reach out through its official helpdesk channels for additional support. As the September 15 deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) draws to a close, the Income Tax Department has said more than 7 crore returns have already been filed, even as users took to social media complaining of glitches and demanding an extension. The surge in traffic on the e-filing portal led to frustration among taxpayers, many of whom reported difficulties in logging in, making payments and downloading their Annual Information Statements (AIS), PTI reported.“More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting (15th September),” it said in a post on X, urging all those who haven’t yet filed to complete the process before the deadline. The last date to file without penalty remains September 15.Last year, 7.28 crore returns were filed by the July 31 due date. This year, however, the deadline had already been extended once — from July 31 to September 15 — because of revisions in ITR forms notified in late April and May, which required back-end modifications. The department also issued clarifications on social media. A late-night post on September 14 dismissed as “fake” a statement circulating online about an extension.“The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” it said. Responding to users flagging issues with tax payment or uploading returns, the department maintained, “The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser cache or try accessing the portal through a different browser.” It also asked users to share details along with their PAN and mobile number to a dedicated grievance email. In response to complaints about AIS/TIS downloads, the department said, “The AIS/TIS facility is functioning without any issues. May we request you to please try accessing it again. In case you continue to face difficulties, please share your details (along with your mobile number & public IP address) with us.”
